Key 1. Set aside a specific time and place for prayer.

It’s easier to stay focused and consistent if you have a routine.   In Psalm 63:1, David says, …Early will I seek You;  It sounds like he may have had a habit of morning prayer.

The most important aspect of prayer is that it be regular and consistent.   We want prayer to be a discipline in our lives. As David said in Psalm 69:13, “I keep praying to you…

Choose a comfortable setting and position. Whether you prefer to pray in a quiet corner of your home, kneeling on the bed or floor,  or sitting on a park bench, find a space that helps you relax.  Make it a place where you can meet God in prayer on a daily basis.

But I keep praying to you, Lord, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation.  (Psalm 69:13)

Key 2. Make a list of things to pray for.

Having a plan for your prayer time will help you stay focused and make sure you don’t forget anything important.

Focus. Prayer is a time to be present and mindful of your thoughts. Limit distractions so that you can focus on communicating with Lord and can hear his response to you.

It’s easy to become distracted during prayer time and forget what it is you wanted to talk to God about. Having a plan for your prayer time can help you stay focused and make sure you cover all the important topics. Here’s a suggestion of things you pray for that can help guide your conversations with God:

Pray for those in need. There are always people in the world that need our prayers, whether it be for physical healing, financial help, or emotional support. Pray for those who are in difficult situations, ask God to provide for them and bring them comfort and peace.

Pray for your family and friends. Ask God to bless your loved ones and protect them from harm. Pray for their health and safety, and ask for guidance and understanding in your relationships with them.

Pray for yourself. Ask God to help you become the person He wants you to be. Ask for strength and guidance in your daily decisions and for the courage to stand up for what is right.

Pray for your community. Pray for peace and justice, for the end of poverty and the spread of the gospel. Pray for the leaders of your city and nation, that they will have wisdom and make decisions that benefit the people.

Pray for the church. Ask God to bless the church, to bring more people to it, and to help it to be a light in the darkness. Pray for your pastor and church leaders, that they will have the strength and guidance to lead the church.

Pray for spiritual growth. Ask God to help you grow in your faith, to deepen your understanding of Him and His Word, and to help you live according to His will.

Pray for those who don’t know Jesus. Pray that they will come to know Him and experience the joy of His salvation.

Pray for the world. Pray for peace and justice, for an end to hatred and violence, and for God’s will to be done in all things.  And the Bible also instructs us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Having a list of things to pray for can help you stay focused and make sure you don’t forget anything important. Take time to think about each of these topics and spend time in prayer for each of them. God will hear your prayers and answer them in His own way and timing.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. (Phillipians 4:6 NLT)

Bonus Prayer Tip: Start with praise and worship. Prayer should be more than asking for things – it should also be filled with praise and worship. Begin by thanking God for who He is, praising Him for His goodness and faithfulness, and worshipping Him in spirit and truth. This will fill your heart with peace and gratitude before you start praying for your needs and other people’s needs.

KEY 3. Be open and honest in your prayers.

Even if you feel like you’re not “getting anywhere” in your prayer life, don’t be afraid to be honest with God.

Sometimes, we can feel like our prayers are going unheard and that God isn’t listening. This can make it difficult to open up and be completely honest in our prayers. It’s important to remember, though, that God is always listening. No matter what we say, He always hears us.  We may not always get the answers we want, but we can be sure that our prayers are being heard.

The Importance of Honesty in Prayer

Being honest in our prayers is important because it allows us to get to the root of our issues and truly open up to God. We may be tempted to sugarcoat things or leave out parts of our problems. But by being honest in our prayers, we can make sure we are addressing the real issues and opening up to God in a way that allows him to really help us.

In order to make sure we are being open and honest in our prayers, it is important to take time to reflect before we begin to pray. We can take this time to think through our thoughts and feelings and to be honest with ourselves. This can help us be sure that our prayers are truly open and honest.

It is also important to be humble in our prayers. We need to remember that God is in control and that we can’t always control the outcome of our prayers. We can be honest with our feelings, but we should also remember that God has a plan and that he knows what is best for us.

O Lord, You have searched me and known me. (Pslam 139:1)

There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand. (Proverbs 19:21 NKJV)

Key 4. Pray with gratitude.

Take time to thank God for all the good things in your life and all that He has done.

End your prayer with a sense of gratitude. When you close your prayer, take a moment to give thanks for your blessings and the time you have spent in communing with God. Thankfulness in prayer is a powerful way to connect with God and keep yourself centered in His love.

Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. (Psalm 95:2 NKJV)

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. (Psalm 107:1 NKJV)

Key 5. Spend time in silence.

Allow yourself to be still and to focus on the presence of God. Listen for His voice.  It’s important to remember that prayer is a two-way conversation. We should not only be open and honest in our prayers, but we should also be listening for God’s answers and guidance. We can be sure that God will answer us in his own way, and it is important to be patient and open to his guidance.  This is a great time to journal any instruction or response you get from Guide.  He is eager to speak into your life.

And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.  (1 Kings 19:12)

Be still, and know that I am God!  (Psalm 46:10 NLT)
Bonus Prayer Tip: Listen to worship music or the word of God being read.  Some people feel more able to focus in quietness or with just instrumental worship.

Prayer is an essential part of a healthy spiritual life and it can bring immense peace and joy to your walk with God. So, take time to nurture your prayer life regularly and watch as God moves in response!
